Urban Planning - Large Scale Modeling

Fondazione GraphiTech organised the workshop on the theme of “Urban Planning – Large Scale Modelling” on 8-9 September 2014 at Museo Alto Garda (La Rocca) in Riva del Garda. The workshop was organised within the STATUS project (Strategic Territorial Agendas for "Small and Middle-Sized Towns" Urban Systems) and was addressed to architects, urban planners, engineers, students and local administrators.
The first day of the workshop was dedicated to the presentations of renowned researchers and entrepreneurs from Italy, Ireland and USA, who provided their expertise on the aspects of developing integrated geographical information systems, localization and crowdsourcing solutions, as well as innovative visualisations and tools for urban and territorial development. Their input on the workshop’s focal points, “Large Scale Modelling” and “Urban Planning”, was instrumental in determining the final shape of SEE Space’s first platform for small and medium sized cities.
After the introduction words from the scientific chairman Mr Raffaele de Amicis, the workshop started with the presentation on the theme of “Newly broadband infrastructures as an integral part of the urban planning for smart territory”, held by Mr Diego Taglioni from Trentino Network (Trento, Italy). The presentation focused on Trentino region, to be one of the best practices among Europe for the development of a region wide fibre optics network. Trentino Network assures the best of breed technology in order to avoid the depopulation of the valleys in one of the most beautiful mountain region in the Alps, Dolomiti. It provides broadband services overall the region and allows advanced telecommunication services for citizens, local firms and public administration, for a smart territory and smarter citizens.
The second presentation, entitled “Geospatial data capture methods and new technologies to support planning and surveying”, was held by Mr Enda Nolan from Coastway Surveys (Bagenalstown, Ireland). He did a demonstration of beyond the state of the art methods used to capture the built environment, and the advantages of using new technologies in the field of planning and surveying.
The next presentation, “Sustainable urban development: for citizens with citizens”, was held by Mr Iacopo Carreras from U-Hopper (Trento, Italy). Successful urban planning and management relies on the active participation of citizens, at the level of both individuals and collectives (organisations, communities). In his talk he showed a case of adoption of a citizen-centric approach in urban planning for sustainable development. A number of enabling ICT tools were presented, together with a set of use cases and best practices for adoption and deployment.
Mr Giovanni Perego from Tech Data/Autodesk (Milan, Italy) gave the presentation on the theme of “New technology for sustainable planning”. He showed how to build digital 3D models of city and environment, using open geographical data or cloud services. The use of digital 3D models can dramatically change the effectiveness of planning and infrastructure design.
Mr Enda Keane from TreeMetrics (Cork, Ireland) opened the afternoon session of presentations. In his presentation, entitled “Urban forestry for the smarter city”, showed the latest technology for monitoring and managing urban forestry.
The next presentation, “The use of evidence-based data modelling and analysis to deliver improved urban planning decisions”, was held by Mr William Haynes from Future Analytics (Dublin, Ireland). The presentation showed how using modelling and analysis centred on integrated data collection and collation can enable key decision makers and stakeholders develop policies and plans that can lead to more improved citizen-centric sustainable urban planning and development.
Mr Brooks Patrick from ESRI (Los Angeles, USA) gave a presentation on the theme of “Procedural 3D Modeling for Smart City Design”. He showed how to make use of large digital 3D city models to simulate the impact of design decisions in real time, enabling decision makers to meet or exceed project goals, whether they be sustainability metrics, regulatory compliance, or cost reduction. Various real-world project examples showcased the urban planning and design capabilities using CityEngine and demonstrated the application of popular urban theory within a parametric framework.
The next presentation was held by Mr Marco Zuppiroli from the University of Ferrara (Ferrara, Italy), where he showed the Ferrara’s experience on constructive features and seismic vulnerability of historic centres through the rapid assessment of historic building stocks.
The last presentation of the first day of the workshop was held by Mr Piergiorgio Cipriano from Sinergis (Ferrara, Italy) and focused on the need for real harmonised data about urban plans.

The second day of the workshop was organised operational roundtable discussion and workshop on the final products that will be published online as a result of the STATUS project. It was attended by representatives of partner cities, scientific and technical partners, as well as relevant representatives within the Programme. The meeting aimed at answering diverse questions related to the project, and establishing the final content of the SEE City Platform – the STATUS online instrument for fostering long-term sustainability, coherence and integration within the South East Europe.
The first topic discussed at the meeting was the technical support to the final platform. Partners agreed that Fondazione GraphiTech should provide assistance to territorial partners after the end of the STATUS Project. Additionally, the organization of a second workshop was considered, with the objective to provide a basic training in the use of the platform.
The discussion moved on to a first review of the new version of the Territorial atlas. Partners provided to the Fondazione GraphiTech team with a list of improvements that will guarantee a better and simple use of the platform. Territorial partners also gave feedbacks about the old features implemented in the Territorial atlas and some suggestions about the new ones.
After, partners considered how to organize and present the final platform to the public users taking into account that at the end of the project there will be three different sections available:
- the Repository, containing all the documents produced during the STATUS Project;
- the Geoblog, a web tool to collect and display urban problems and solutions;
- the Territorial atlas, an online platform with a collection of the current urban data, policies and directives.
At last, the meeting focused on the final conference of the STATUS Project. Attendees addressed the critical points for the preparation of the final conference that will be held in Alba Iulia at the end of October.
The two-day workshop was very successful; nearly 60 professionals attended the event with a great interest in the theme of urban planning and 3D modelling.
